Gaggia Classic Evo Pro
Commercial parts in a domestic box. The machine you keep, not the machine you replace.

View on AmazonThe short version
The Classic Evo Pro is the closest thing to a small commercial machine you can put on a home counter: a solid steel body made in Italy, a full-size 58mm brass-and-steel portafilter, a three-way solenoid valve and a proper two-hole steam wand. It has no screen, no PID and no automation. What it has is parts you can service, replace and upgrade for a decade.
Ideal for
The person who wants to learn espresso properly, values repairability over convenience, and expects to still own this machine in ten years.
Look elsewhere if
Anyone who wants a fast, forgiving morning routine, or who does not want to buy a separate grinder and jug.

The full review
Every other machine in this comparison is designed to make espresso easier. The Gaggia is designed to get out of your way. It gives you the 58mm commercial portafilter standard — which means every bottomless portafilter, precision basket and puck screen on the market fits it — a brass group head with real thermal mass, and a three-way solenoid valve that dumps the pressure after the shot so you knock out a dry puck instead of a swamp.
The absence of a PID is the honest catch. The Gaggia regulates temperature with a simple thermostat, which means brew temperature drifts and you learn to work around it: let it heat properly before the first shot, flush the group, and pull with some rhythm. Experienced users call this temperature surfing and treat it as part of the craft. If that sounds like a chore rather than a ritual, this is the wrong machine — and the Barista Express or the Bambino Plus is the right one.
Steam is a genuine strength. The commercial two-hole wand has real power, more than you expect from a single boiler at this size, and it textures milk properly once you learn to angle it. Because it is a single boiler you still brew and steam in sequence, and the wait to switch from brew to steam temperature is longer than on the Brevilles.
The real argument for the Gaggia is the ten-year view. This is the machine with the deepest parts availability and the largest modification community of any model here. PID kits, OPV springs, silicone group gaskets, bottomless portafilters — a Classic bought today can be a substantially better machine in three years, and still be repairable in ten. That is a very different proposition from an appliance you replace.

Pros and cons
What we like
- Full 58mm commercial portafilter — the entire aftermarket fits it
- Solid steel body with a brass group head, made in Italy
- Three-way solenoid valve leaves a dry, clean puck
- Genuinely powerful commercial steam wand
- Endlessly serviceable and moddable; parts availability is the best here
- Smallest depth of any machine in this comparison at just 8 inches
What to consider
- No PID — brew temperature drifts and you have to work around it
- Steepest learning curve here; unforgiving of sloppy technique
- No grinder, no milk jug and no water filter in the box
- Needs a proper warm-up before the first shot, not seconds
- 1-year warranty, and no automated descaling program
What owners report
Summarised from the 3,170 Amazon ratings
Reviewers with real coffee experience are the loudest advocates here — several describe decades of coffee background and rate it the best machine in its price range, repeatedly citing build quality and durability. The most common practical complaint is minor: the portafilter is stiff to lock in until the new gasket beds in. Compared with the super-automatics in this comparison, reviewers consistently frame the trade as more work for a better cup.
I've been enjoying coffee for almost sixty years. I've worked as a barista in my early twenties. I know my way around coffee.
Insane quality and durability. The coffee is fantastic all the time. Only issue I found was that it is a bit tough to lock the portafilter from the get go.
I've had this machine for a little over six months and it's absolutely killer. It's never had an issue.
